Using interactive video to help build climate smart communities

Two boys play on docked boat in the Philippines. Climate start communities.
The University of the Philippines is working with coastal and upland communities to explore how best to promote harmony between biodiversity and human livelihoods.

As part of this initiative, the University used Near-Life to create interactive learning materials to engage with young people around the project’s themes.

One component of the bSMART project is to develop multimedia materials and open online courses. As part of the course targeting the youth participants from these sites, the team integrated interactive video into the materials developed.

The objective was to provide content that was more engaging for a young audience.

Because the Philippines is situated in the “Pacific Ring of Fire” it is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Understanding this – and being prepared – helps mitigate the potential impacts and support sustainable communities. Subsequently, the University adapted existing content on the subject of earthquakes for high school students.

As a result, the reaction to the materials has been extremely positive and has supported the University’s response to the community-driven requests for immersive and interactive learning.

“We’ve found Near-Life’s technology to be simple and easy to use, allowing us to create more engaging content quickly and easily.”

Noreen Dianne Alazada, University of Philippines

The University shares the Near-Life interactive learning experiences via its Moodle LMS.
