Case study - Using gamification to support infection control

Project Firstline - a comprehensive infection control program

To help prevent the spread of infectious diseases in U.S. health care settings, Mountain Pacific transformed an infographic about how to properly read a disinfectant label into a 10-minute, informative and interactive, micro-learning video using Near-Life.

Case Study: Mountain Pacific

In October 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rolled out Project Firstline, a comprehensive infection control program designed to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases in U.S. health care settings.

A $180 million program, Project Firstline features new, concise, interactive training for staff in hospitals, outpatient clinics, dialysis centres, nursing homes and other health care facilities to protect workers on the frontlines—from doctors to environmental services staff—with the goal of empowering them with the knowledge of the science and reasoning behind today’s infection control practices.

Mountain Pacific, a nonprofit organisation headquartered in Helena, Montana, works to bring national public health initiatives and priorities to the local level, working in multiple states and U.S. Pacific Territories to support community, regional and state health care communities in improving population health and the delivery of care services. The CDC contracts with Mountain Pacific to host events, create training and educational tools and help apply infection prevention control practices in Wyoming, Hawaii and Alaska.

Working with the Wyoming Department of Health and the CDC, Mountain Pacific transformed an infographic about how to properly read disinfectant label, How to Read a Disinfectant Label, into a 10-minute, informative and interactive, micro-learning video using Near-Life.

Fun, informative training

The training video includes critical elements and core concepts of cleaning and disinfection, and the interactive gamification boosts the learner’s skills and knowledge. Mountain Pacific has garnered evaluations and feedback from users, and qualitative results display a positive learning experience.

Said one user, This was a fun, informative [training] that kept my attention.

“Infection prevention and control is everyone’s responsibility, no matter their workplace or community setting.  It is important for health care workers to understand the ‘why’ behind providing hands-on infection control training. Using Near-Life’s technology allowed us to take important information from a flyer that wasn’t engaging those who needed to understand and apply its content and create a captivating training video that health care professionals enjoy and, most importantly, will help improve infection prevention practices to keep their patients and themselves safer from infectious disease.”
